Low crime don't mean no crime! →
English cyclist Greg Browning was on a grandscale cycling trip from London to Sydney, almost 30,000km when his bike got stolen at an Orchard Road shopping mall. He was shocked because as he says: ‘My first reaction was of disbelief. I’ve been in so many countries where people said I would get robbed, and then this happened in Singapore, which I was told was one of the safest places in...

books overboard!
i’ve given away 90% of my books, some to my sisters, and the rest to the salvation army. only kept the good ones that i could not possibly do without (eg. the rknarayans & the vsnaipauls, which i adore). now that the shelves are clear and the bulk is gone, i have a reason to start a new collection of books. so when’s the next booksale?

Lifetime Value of a Customer (case study)
One of the tips from yesterday’s workshop was to figure out the lifetime value of a customer as opposed to just the individual sale from a one-on-one encounter. I guess this is something I’ve not considered in much detail before, and that many other businesses also do not. For example: My wife and I went to a number of Islamic bookshops yesterday morning to find an Islamic calendar...

what my mom taught me.
I attended a workshop today conducted by Suria Mohd // Butterfly Clique. At the beginning of the workshop, she shared her early experience when she began her foray into starting a business; how she met with criticism from others, and how, despite the criticism, she forged on to become the success she is today. This made me reflect on my Mom’s experience, and how much harder it is generally...

2010 Resolution #1: Fitness
A father of 2 (insya’Allah) needs to be in good shape to keep up with the little tykes. But of course, resolutions, like hearts, were made to be broken. :P

KL to SIN
It’s been quite a satisfying trip; we managed to fit in a day trip to Genting Highland, we took the children to Aquaria KLCC (which seems much more huge than singapore’s underwater world and has more activities for the kids too) and i even managed to wade through a jam-packed PC fair at the KL Convention Centre. needless to say, we made our routine stops to Suria KLCC shopping mall,...

down to the last hours. we’re frantically packing stuff for a trip to kl, heading out before the crack of dawn, over the causeway and towards the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. the last week has been frantic, trying to polish off a good portion of work, but work being work, it is never complete. i leave the balance in the good hands of my colleagues, my sis and my designer, positive...

devil in the details
i worked for a company in 2005, but it was all a scam. the boss was a pathological liar, a longtime conman who had a history of cheating and conning. he’d gone to prison a couple of times and just gotten out of jail and set up the company (we didn’t know this at the time, of course) he was so convincing. he employed a secretary and an accountant. he employed a business manager. then...

Prospective client: $400 for a logo?! Why are you so expensive? My nephew has Photoshop—I can just get him to do it.
Me: Does your nephew have Microsoft Word?
Prospective client: Yes.
Me: Then have him write you a novel while he’s at it.

failing
the fear of failure can be so paralysing that it leaves one breathless and unable to make decisive moves. so afraid am i of failure’s repercussions, that i dare not commit or contemplate action. but caught in the clutch of this gut-clenching mental and psychological trauma, is the thin line separation between losers and winners, the separation between courageous leadership and the herd...
